Doing Nothing, Accidentally Shopping, and Other Leisure-Time Skills

What do you enjoy doing most in your leisure time?

If I’m being honest—and leisure time deserves honesty—I enjoy doing nothing.

Not the aesthetic, soft-life version of nothing that comes with candles and calming music. Just regular, unfiltered nothing. Sitting around. Existing. Letting my mind wander into unnecessary overthinking and then pretending that was intentional. In a world obsessed with productivity, doing nothing feels like quiet rebellion.

The second thing I enjoy is window shopping on Amazon. Except it has a strange habit of un-windowing itself.

I start responsibly. Just browsing. No intent. No commitment. I compare prices like I’m about to write a dissertation on them. I read reviews written by people who are either deeply offended or overwhelmingly grateful. I add items to my cart “for later.” And then, without my active participation, a package shows up at my door.

I don’t remember ordering it. Amazon remembers.

I also spend a significant amount of my leisure time cooking up stories in my head.

Entire plots form during the most inconvenient moments—while commuting, staring at walls, or trying to fall asleep. The characters are complex, the twists are dramatic, and everything makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, these stories are very comfortable living inside my head and show little interest in being written down.

Some of my best ideas exist only as imaginary masterpieces. Fully developed. Permanently unwritten.

Then there’s sleeping, which deserves a special mention.

Sometimes it’s rest. Sometimes it’s escape. Sometimes it’s simply choosing unconsciousness over dealing with reality. Either way, it’s efficient and comforting. If sleeping were a measurable skill, I’d like to believe I’m at least above average.

Finally, I enjoy watching crime shows.

There’s something oddly calming about watching fictional crimes get solved in under an hour. I sit there, relaxed, mentally accusing every character while appreciating how neatly chaos can be wrapped up on screen. It’s entertainment, but also research—purely for personal reasons.

So my leisure time is spent doing nothing, accidentally shopping online, building fictional worlds in my head, sleeping like it’s a hobby, and watching crime unfold safely from my screen.

It’s not impressive. It’s not particularly productive. But it’s honest—and very much me.
