The first day of April holds something very special. The world is celebrating, one thing or the other. Spring is just starting to peek shyly, the world is taken over by laughter and pranks, today begins the new financial year, new budget, new plans. But for the state of Odisha in India, this day is of a greater significance. This day marks the day in 1936 when Odisha became a separate province in British India, created specifically for people who spoke the Odia language. This day is called Odisha Day, or for the culturally inclined people – The Utkal Divas.
At the time, this was a significant moment because Odisha became India’s first state formed on the basis of language, long before linguistic states became common across the country.
What is Odisha Day or Utkal Divas?
Like I said, Odisha Day, also known as Utkal Divas, is celebrated every year on April 1 to commemorate the formation of the state of Odisha in 1936.
The day marks the creation of the Orissa Province during British rule, bringing together Odia-speaking regions that were previously scattered across administrative divisions like Bengal, Bihar and the Madras Presidency.
For the people of Odisha, this day symbolizes the preservation of their language, culture and regional identity.
The History Behind Odisha’s Formation in 1936
Before 1936, Odia-speaking areas were divided among several British provinces. Because of this administrative fragmentation, the Odia language and culture often struggled for recognition.
Many leaders and intellectuals began advocating for a separate province where Odia speakers could preserve and promote their identity.
One of the most prominent leaders of this movement was Madhusudan Das, often called the architect of modern Odisha. Along with other reformers and freedom fighters, he played a major role in pushing for the unification of Odia-speaking regions.
After years of advocacy and political efforts, the British government finally created the Orissa Province on April 1, 1936, giving Odia speakers their own administrative state.
Today, that moment is celebrated as Utkal Divas across Odisha.
From Orissa to Odisha: The Name Change
For many years, the state was officially called Orissa, a spelling introduced during British colonial rule.
However, the name did not accurately reflect the pronunciation of the Odia language. To correct this, the Indian government officially changed the state’s name from Orissa to Odisha in 2011.
The language was also officially renamed from Oriya to Odia. This change was seen as an important step toward restoring the state’s cultural and linguistic authenticity.

Odisha is one of India’s most culturally rich states, known for its temples, classical dance traditions and unique art forms.

The Rath Yatra in Puri is one of India’s most iconic festivals. During this grand celebration, massive chariots carrying the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees.

Odisha Day represents a victory for linguistic identity and cultural pride. The formation of the state based on language later influenced the reorganization of Indian states along linguistic lines after independence.
