Why doing nothing might be the most productive thing you do — and what we lose when we fill every silence.
There is a particular species of discomfort that modern life has nearly driven to extinction. It arrives in waiting rooms, on train platforms, in the dead minute before a meeting begins. It is the feeling of having nothing to do — not the peaceful nothing of rest, but the restless, itchy nothing of a mind with no task assigned to it. We call it boredom. And we have become extraordinarily good at making sure we never have to feel it.
The smartphone, of course, is the primary culprit. The average person now unlocks their phone 96 times a day — once every ten minutes of waking life. We check it while waiting for coffee, while sitting on the toilet, while our children talk to us. Every idle second has become colonised by the feed, the inbox, the notification. The internal experience of vacancy — of a mind turning on itself with nothing to grip — has become almost inaccessible.
And yet something curious is happening. Researchers, philosophers, and a growing number of people who have quietly noticed something missing are beginning to argue that boredom, properly understood, is not a problem to be solved. It is a signal. A feature, not a bug. And in eliminating it, we may have cut ourselves off from some of our most important cognitive and emotional capacities.
What boredom actually is
The scientific study of boredom is surprisingly young. For most of the 20th century, psychology treated it as a minor complaint — the province of bored housewives and inattentive schoolchildren. It was not until the 1980s that researchers began studying it systematically, and only in the last decade has it attracted serious attention.
What they have found is that boredom is not simply the absence of stimulation. It is an active, aversive emotional state — a “desire for desires,” as the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer put it, long before the neuroscientists arrived. You are not understimulated; you are frustrated by your inability to engage with anything available to you. Your mind wants to move, and it cannot find traction.
This distinction matters because it changes how we understand what boredom is for. Psychologists Andreas Elpidorou and others have proposed that boredom functions as a regulatory emotion — a signal from your brain that your current situation is not meeting your needs for meaning and agency. It is, in other words, a nudge. A gentle but insistent prod that says: something needs to change.
Boredom is not the enemy of creativity. It is one of creativity’s primary engines — the pressure that forces the mind to generate its own alternatives.
This is why children who are never allowed to be bored — whose every moment is structured, scheduled, and entertained — often struggle to find intrinsic motivation. They have been deprived of the experience of having to generate their own direction. They wait, passively, for the next stimulus. Adults who have spent years obliterating boredom with their phones may be in a similar position, though few of us would admit it.
The mind at rest is not resting
One of the most striking discoveries in neuroscience over the past twenty years is that the brain does not go quiet when it has nothing to do. When you stop concentrating on a task, a completely different set of neural regions activates — a network so consistent and so widespread that researchers gave it a name: the default mode network, or DMN.
The DMN was initially dismissed as neural noise, the brain idling like a car in neutral. But it turned out to be anything but idle. It is most active during mind-wandering — during boredom, reverie, and daydream. And what it does during those periods is remarkable. It integrates memories, simulates future scenarios, constructs theories of other minds, processes unresolved emotional experiences, and generates what researchers call “spontaneous thought” — the unconstrained mental wandering that we experience as daydreaming.
In short, the default mode network is where a great deal of our most sophisticated thinking happens. It is where we plan, reflect, empathize, and create. And it can only fully activate when we are not directing our attention at something external.
Every time we reach for our phone to kill a moment of boredom, we are interrupting this process. We are, in a very literal neurological sense, preventing our brains from doing some of their most important work.
Creativity’s unglamorous engine
Ask almost any writer, composer, or scientist where their best ideas come from, and you will rarely hear “during a focused work session.” You will hear: in the shower. Walking the dog. Lying awake at 3 a.m. Staring out a train window. The clichés of creative incubation are so consistent across disciplines and centuries that they constitute something close to empirical data.
The psychologist Sandi Mann, who has spent years studying boredom at the University of Central Lancashire, ran a simple experiment. She asked participants to perform a boring task — copying numbers from a phone book — and then gave them a creative challenge. Their performance was significantly better than that of a control group who went straight to the creative task. The boredom had primed them. It had, in some sense, loosened something.
Other researchers have found similar effects. Boredom increases what psychologists call “associative thinking” — the ability to make unexpected connections between disparate ideas, which is widely considered the core cognitive mechanism of creativity. A mind desperate for stimulation, it turns out, begins to generate its own. It starts reaching across its own contents, making links it would never make when occupied with a task at hand.
The self that boredom reveals
There is another dimension to this that has less to do with productivity and more to do with identity. Boredom forces you to be alone with yourself. And that, for many people, has become genuinely frightening.
In a now-famous series of studies, psychologist Timothy Wilson found that a significant proportion of people would rather administer mild electric shocks to themselves than sit alone in a quiet room for fifteen minutes with nothing to do. The discomfort of unoccupied consciousness, for many, is worse than physical pain.
If you cannot tolerate being alone with your own mind for fifteen minutes, that is worth knowing. That discomfort is information.
But this avoidance has a cost. When we constantly outsource our attention — to apps, to content, to the ambient noise of other people’s opinions — we lose touch with something that philosophers have always considered essential to a well-lived life: self-knowledge. The Socratic imperative to “know thyself” requires, at minimum, that you occasionally shut up and listen to what you actually think and feel.
Boredom, in its uncomfortable way, creates the conditions for that listening. The person who cannot sit quietly for ten minutes without reaching for a screen has, in effect, made themselves unavailable to themselves. Their preferences, values, and unprocessed emotional material pile up, unexamined, like unopened letters.
Psychotherapists have noted, quietly, that this avoidance of inner experience may be contributing to the epidemic levels of anxiety and dissatisfaction many people report. If you cannot tolerate being alone with your own mind for fifteen minutes, that is worth knowing. That discomfort is information.
How to be bored again
None of this is an argument for passivity or deliberate underachievement. Boredom at chronic levels is genuinely harmful — it is associated with depression, impulsivity, and risk-taking. The goal is not to become a passive blob staring at the ceiling. The goal is to recover the capacity to tolerate, and even welcome, the unoccupied moment.
The practical interventions are almost embarrassingly simple. Leave your phone in another room occasionally. Commute without headphones once a week. Sit with your coffee before reaching for your screen. Wait for a friend without scrolling. Let your mind do what it instinctively wants to do in those moments — wander.
It will feel deeply uncomfortable at first. That is not a sign you are doing it wrong. That is the signal the researchers are talking about — the regulatory alert that something is needed. Stay with it. Notice what surfaces. Notice where your mind goes when you stop directing it.
What you may find is surprising. You may find that you have opinions you did not know you held, problems that have been silently solving themselves, and a capacity for absorption in your own experience that the perpetual stream of content has been quietly eroding.
Boredom, it turns out, was never the enemy of a rich inner life. For most of human history, it was one of its preconditions. We gave it up to feel perpetually stimulated. We got the stimulation. But many of us have a nagging sense that we traded away something we cannot quite name.
Perhaps it is simply this: the experience of being present in a moment with nothing required of you, and finding — after the discomfort passes — that the moment is enough.
