The Honest Internet Dictionary
Language has a funny habit of lying to us.
It wraps ordinary things in impressive words so they sound more complex, more important, or more mysterious than they really are. But if we strip away the branding and the tech jargon, the internet becomes much easier to understand.
So I decided to rename some common internet terms in a way that feels… more honest.
Welcome to The Honest Internet Dictionary.
Internet → Infinity Portal
The internet isn’t just a network.
It’s an Infinity Portal.
You open one tab to check something small and suddenly you’re five hours deep into documentaries about Roman concrete, conspiracy threads about pigeons being government drones, and videos of a cat accidentally discovering physics.
Everything is everywhere. Want to know what the President of Uganda is up to these days? Open the infinity portal, where every piece of knowledge is a few clicks and two seconds away.
There is no real end to it.
Only escape.
Social Media → Meta Cell
Social media feels like freedom, but it’s also strangely like a Meta Cell.
Everyone you know is locked inside your phone.
Friends. Relatives. Old classmates. That coworker you barely spoke to but somehow still follow. I know what my cousin, whom I haven’t seen in sixteen years, is up to. He lives in my phone.
They’re all there… living inside the same glowing rectangle.
Social Media Business → Infinity Cell Shop
If social media is a Meta Cell, then businesses operating there are simply stores inside that digital prison.
Brands selling products. Creators selling attention. Ads selling dreams.
Small digital shops inside a massive online cell.
An Infinity Cell Shop.
Algorithm → PRS (Pattern Recognition System)
“Algorithm” sounds mysterious and powerful.
But at its core, it’s just a Pattern Recognition System.
It watches what you click, what you like, what you pause on, and what you ignore.
Then it quietly learns your behavior and feeds you more of the same. It’s the digital manifestation of yourself.
Sometimes it understands you better than people do.
Viral Post → Contendemic Virus
A viral post spreads exactly like a disease.
One person shares it. Then another. Then thousands. Then millions.
It’s not just content.
It’s a Contendemic Virus — a content unit spreading through the infinity portal like a pandemic.
Trend → Contendemic
When something trends, it spreads across the internet like an infection.
Everyone talks about it. Everyone reposts it. Everyone suddenly has an opinion about it.
For a short time, it becomes a Contendemic infecting timelines everywhere.
Comment Section → Infinity Opinion Portal
The comment section is where opinions multiply endlessly.
Experts. Non-experts. Angry strangers. Accidental philosophers.
Everyone walks in and declares a viewpoint. And it’s almost always unsolicited.
Which makes the comment section an Infinity Opinion Portal.
Troll → Jobless Mortal
A troll is someone who wakes up and chooses chaos.
Not to solve anything.
Not to improve anything.
Just to disturb people online.
In simpler terms: a Jobless Mortal with Wi-Fi.
Meme → Doxyminer
Memes mine emotions.
They extract dopamine and sometimes oxytocin from your brain using a single image and a few words.
Which makes them essentially Doxyminers — miners digging directly into the brain’s reward system.
Memer → Infinity Laugh Agent
Behind every meme is a memer.
Someone whose job is to compress a situation, idea, or frustration into something that makes millions of strangers laugh.
They spread humor across the internet.
Which makes them Infinity Laugh Agents.
Hashtag → Keyword
Hashtags try to look revolutionary.
But in reality they are simply keywords.
Labels that help the internet organize chaos into searchable piles.
Follower → Watcher / Audience
Nobody truly “follows” anyone online.
They watch.
Silently.
Occasionally reacting.
So the honest word is simply Watcher — or if you prefer something less creepy, Audience.
Like Button → Appreciation
A like isn’t deep support.
It’s not devotion.
It’s just a small moment of Appreciation.
A digital nod that says:
“I saw this. That was nice.”
Influencer → Aspiring Infinity Agent
Influencers present themselves as culture shapers.
But in reality they’re simply people trying to gain influence inside the endless digital world.
Posting. Experimenting. Hoping something spreads.
Which makes them Aspiring Infinity Agents — the wannabes.
Clickbait → Infinity Lie
Clickbait is simple.
A promise that will never be fulfilled.
A dramatic title attached to a mildly disappointing reality.
Which makes it exactly what it is:
An Infinity Lie — a lie of the Infinity Portal.
Cancel Culture → Infinity Police Investigation
When the internet decides someone is guilty, the investigation begins.
Old tweets get dug up. Screenshots appear. Context disappears.
Suddenly millions of strangers become detectives.
An endless Infinity Police Investigation.
Online Argument → Conflict of the Jobless
Most online arguments solve absolutely nothing.
Two strangers shouting at each other through keyboards while the rest of the world continues normally.
Which makes it exactly what it is:
A Conflict of the Jobless.
Notification → Attention Seeker
Notifications rarely inform.
They interrupt.
Your phone vibrates constantly because every app wants a piece of your focus.
Which makes every notification exactly what it is:
An Attention Seeker.
Selfie → Photo Journaling
A selfie isn’t just a picture of your face.
It’s a small visual record of a moment — where you were, what you felt, what your day looked like.
Instead of writing about your life, you document it through images.
In that sense, selfies are simply Photo Journaling.
DM (Direct Message) → Intimate Chat Room
Direct messages are where the internet becomes private.
No audience. No performance.
Just two people talking behind the public stage.
An Intimate Chat Room.
Video Call → Photo Teleporting
Video calls feel like teleportation.
Two people in completely different locations suddenly appear face-to-face inside a small screen.
Distance collapses.
It isn’t real teleportation.
But it’s close enough to feel like Photo Teleporting.
Content Creator → Content Creator
Sometimes the original word is already honest enough.
A Content Creator creates content.
No mystery there.
Podcast → Nonsense Talk Show
Televisions were often called idiot boxes a long time ago. This term takes inspiration from that.
Some podcasts are insightful.
Some are educational.
And some are simply two people talking about absolutely nothing for three hours.
Which makes them a Nonsense Talk Show.
The internet sounds complicated when we use its official vocabulary.
But once you rename things honestly, it becomes much simpler.
It’s just an Infinity Portal full of watchers, aspiring infinity agents, doxyminers, and the occasional conflict of the jobless.
And somehow, despite everything, we keep going back through the portal every single day.
